Australian Live Poker Tournaments
By far the most popular live poker tournament held in Australia is the annual Aussie Millions. Established in 1998, the Aussie Millions is now the 6th ranked poker tournament worldwide which is an incredible feat considering how old the event is. The Aussie Millions is held at the Crown Casino in Melbourne Australia and guarantees a $2 million AUD 1st place prize. Similar to the World Series of Poker held in the United States, the Aussie Millions schedules multiple events ranging in buy-ins and game formats with the 2009 series having 17 different tournaments in addition to the Main Event. The Main Event typically has an AUD$10,500 buy-in and draws in players from around the world. During the 2009 series, the Aussie Millions broke the world's record for hosting the world's largest cash game where a buy-in of AUD$1,000,000 was required to sit and play.
Following the Aussie Millions is the recent release of Pokerstars newest poker tour, the Australian New Zealand Poker Tour. Established in 2009, the ANZPT schedules a number of events throughout Australia and New Zealand with players earning their seats by winning satellites held exclusively at Pokerstars.com or paying the entry fee. The ANZPT is run by Commissioner Danny McDonaugh, who has been promoting and running poker tournaments in Australia for more than 10 years including a position as a televised tournament director. He continues to be the tournament director for the Pokerstars APPT and brings his experience to the ANZPT.
